Mediana, Serbia


City Municipality of Mediana is one of the five city municipalities established in October 2004 by an administrative division of the City of Nis. By its territory (10 km2) it is the smallest and by the number of inhabitants (88.010 inhabitants in 2011) it is the largest city municipality. Spatially speaking, the municipality covers part of Nis with two distinct parts – the old city center of Nis with its centuries-long history, and the new part of Nis, which was built mainly in the seventies and eighties of the 20th century. As part of the City Municipality of Mediana is the suburb Brzi Brod, formed on the remains of prehistoric and antic settlement. It was first mentioned in 1498. The area of the City Municipality of Mediana is highly urbanized and densely populated. According to the degree of urbanization and the overall population density it is one of the first municipalities in Serbia.

City municipality of Mediana covers an old, historic ground that is the crossroads of many civilizations and their homes and naturally represents an inexhaustible mine of cultural and historical heritage. The archeaological site Mediana as the birthplace of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great, the world’s single monument the Scull Tower are the most important, but certainly not the only traces of human life in this fertile valley.

This antique historical site of Mediana on the way Niš-Niška Banja (Spa) is a witness of imperial Naissus wealth and glory. The remains of imperial palace, together with peristil, were discovered. Luxury villas with mosaic floors, sacral objects (baptistery room), economy buildings with pitos, Roman bathrooms, water tanks, fort remains etc testify about Naissus culture and wealth from the times of Emperor Constantine.

Ćele Kula is a unique world monument. It is a tower built of the skulls of Serbian rebels for freedom. The Turks built this monument after Čegar battle.

The National Theatre has a century old long tradition. The Gallery of Contemporary Fine Arts is the guardian of artistic treasury, but also a promoter of modern flows in fine arts. Several galleries are available for exhibitions.

In the National museum collections there are around 40,000 items from the realms of archeology, history, ethnology, art history, cultural history. The most valuable ancient collection exhibits articles which testify of the golden age of the imperial Naissus.

Among those ambient complexes and also separate structures you can single out old town type of ambient – Kazandzijsko sokače (Tinkers alley) from XVIIIth century. Coming from the first part of 20th century the western part of King Milan Square, Andonović palace, Court building, Niš Assembly, are all very typical for this period. New kind of architecture is presented by the Army Home, trade centers “Kalča” and “Gorča”, sport hall “Čair”.
